Two types of quail hunting packages are offered: 1. The Wagon Quail Hunts, Buckeye's premium quail hunting packages, are traditional southern wagon hunts featuring a luxurious, driven motorized wagon, horseback mounted guides, Buckeye's finest pointing & flushing dog string and access to the Plantation's wagon courses. Guests may ride horseback on a walking horse if desired. Also featured are six quail habitats of expansive acreage that are hunted then rested several days on a rotational basis to ensure large coveys of strong flying wild quail and early released quail whose behavior and flight characteristics closely mimic those of wild birds. Horse mounted guides, and horse mounted guests who desire to ride, work fine pointing dogs to find coveys of birds as a driver/dog handler follows with guests in a motorized hunting wagon, custom-designed for the job with several elevated and comfortable seats within a gallery. Guests can watch the dogs work the cover and point coveys. A group of four guests will take turns sending two guns to the covey rise as the dog handler sends in a flushing/retrieving lab from the wagon. Each morning and afternoon hunt is three hours in duration and several coveys per hour are typically found. It is important to make the distinction that the Wagon Quail Hunt is a high quality hunting experience vs. a high volume shooting experience. While there is no shooting limit on a Wagon Hunt and guests will see a lot of birds and have ample shooting opportunities, the objective will be to shoot the initial covey rise (typically 2-4 shots per gun per covey rise) and not hunt the individual birds after the covey disperses. Persons interested in strictly a high-volume shooting experience may choose to reserve a Walking Quail Hunt. The Wagon Quail Hunt packages are conducted with parties of four guests, two guns out per covey rise. If a guest party of two books a Wagon Quail Hunt, Buckeye Plantation reserves the right to book a second party of two to make a complete party of four. 2. The Walking Quail Hunts, are guided walking hunts for parties of two using a comfortable, wide bodied All Terrain Vehicle as transportation and dog kennel. Featured are excellent pointer & versatile hunting dogs and access to the Plantation's walking courses; several habitats of appropriate walking acreage each that are augmented before each hunt at a rate of 50 birds per hunter with conditioned flight birds. Any and all birds landed within the habitat bounds may be pursued and there is no shooting limit or extra bird charges. On a Walking Hunt, guides and guests will the drive the ATV or walk through the quail habitats as the dogs work the cover and point the coveys. Two guests per ATV ensure that hunters experience high volume shooting. Each morning and afternoon hunt is three hours in duration. In the interest of safety Buckeye Plantation absolutely does not allow
automatic or pump shotguns while quail hunting. 12 gauge shotguns are
not recommended for quail hunting. Fine Orvis and Beretta over-and-under
and side-by-side shotguns in 28 and 20 gauge are available for use at
no extra charge. |
